We all want to ring in the new year in style and start the new year putting our best face forward. Although makeup can be expensive, achieving the perfect New Year’s Eve look doesn’t have to break the bank. With just a little bit of research and shopping around, any makeup novice can not only find the perfect makeup on the cheap but also apply it themselves and look flawless. Your NYE look will not only look great but, with these steps, it’ll be affordable too!
Step 1: Researching Trends
Don’t fret, I’ve already done this for you. Two of 2015’s biggest makeup trends are winged eyeliner and bold lip color. Couple that with special event trends like glittery lids and you’ve got a sexy look to try on.
Step 2: Purchasing Makeup
One of my favorite bands is NYX. NYX Two-Timer Eyeliner ($10 at nyxcosmetics.com) has a pencil/crayon liner on one end and a felt-tipped liquid liner on the other end. It’s the perfect liner for any occasion. but is particularly good for achieving a winged tip effect. NYX also makes a great On-The-Go Palette ($30 at nyxcosmetics.com) that comes equipped with eyeshadow, blush, and creamy lip colors.
–H&M: High Impact Eye Color ($6.99), Eyelashes ($5.99), Pure Definition Mascara ($12.99), Lash Glue ($4.99), and Press-On Nails ($7.99) at hm.com.
–Sephora: Beautiful Crush Blockbuster Palate ($35) and Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner ($13) at sephora.com.
–Stila: Eyeshadow ($18), Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner ($22), and Stay All Day Vinyl Lip Gloss ($24) at stilacosmetics.com.
–Urban Decay: Moondust Eyeshadow ($21) and Matte Revolution Lipstick ($22) at urbandecay.com.
–Kat Von D: Metal Crush Eyeshadow ($21) and Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21) at katvondbeauty.com.
Step 3: Application
Not all of us are skilled in the makeup arena; online tutorials are really helpful for those of us who aren’t. You can find great tips and tricks from professional makeup artists like Jenn of JennisseMakeup or Marlena of MakeupGeekTV on YouTube. You can also consult Pinterest for videos or step-by-step picture tutorials.
If you’re still not feeling confident and want a little one-on-one help from a professional, walk into your local Sephora or any department store that has a makeup counter. While I can’t guarantee a free makeover, the makeup pros will recommend makeup to achieve your look and will also show you how to apply it for free. They may try to get you to purchase some products. but a purchase isn’t required.
HBS Tip: When practicing your NYE makeup look, have some makeup wipes on hand. Cucumber wipes are great for not only cleaning your skin but leaving it moist and feeling fresh in between makeup applications.
